Mahsa Amini case update

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib cut her hair in parliament

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib cut her hair in parliament, following the example of deputy Darya Safai, in solidarity with anti-government protests in Iran triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the country’s moral police custody. A third lawmaker, Goedele Liekens, also cut her hair

Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, has declared that the city intends to make Mahsa Amini a posthumous honorary citizen.

Mahsa Amini’s death, which occurred after she was detained by authorities for allegedly wearing a loose hijab, has sparked widespread protests in Iran.

On Twitter, Hidalgo wrote that this distinction was also meant to honor all Iranian women who fought and are fighting for freedom while risking their lives.

A location in Paris is also to be named after the Kurdish-Iranian Amini, she wrote.

“Our admiration is infinite for these women. Paris will always be on the side of those who fight for their rights and their freedom.”

An Iranian coroner’s report into the death of Mahsa Amini said she did not die due to blows to the head and limbs but from multiple organ failure caused by cerebral hypoxia, the official news agency IRNA reported on Friday.

Mahsa Amini did not die from blows to body

The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in the custody of Iran’s morality police has ignited more than two weeks of nationwide protests. Her father has said she suffered bruises to her legs, and has held the police responsible for her death.

Cause of mahsa amini death

The coroner’s report said her death was “not caused by blow to the head and limbs”. It did not say whether she had suffered any injuries. The report did say she fell while in custody due to “underlying diseases”.

“Due to the ineffective cardio-respiratory resuscitation in the first critical minutes, she suffered severe hypoxia and as a result brain damage.”

Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini was visiting Tehran with her family when she encountered morality police and died after a “violent blow to the head”, her cousin living in Iraq had claimed.

Amini was “dressed normally. Like all women in Iran, she was wearing the hijab,” her cousin added.

In Iran, women are required to cover their hair, and the morality police bans them from wearing coats above the knee, tight trousers, bright colours or torn jeans.

Israeli demonstrators joined the global show of support for Iranians taking to the streets to protest their government following the death of Mahsa Amini.
