Gadsby is an Australian comedian who has been building up a solid reputation for over ten years. Nanette is the first show of hers to make her internationally famous, and in it, she declares fairly early on that she doesn’t believe that she is able to do comedy anymore.

Gadsby is breathtakingly lucid about how her own comedy works, and how comedy in general works, and this is one of the things that stops the show from being just a story about one woman and her life. It’s a show about how we make art, and what we demand from it, and what we will do for a quiet or more successful life. This is what links the theme of comedy to the personal, as in Gadsby’s observation that her grandmother was constantly asking her if she’d found the right man yet, not out of a desire that her granddaughter not be gay but because Gadsby had never got around to coming out to her.
